What is a male dancer called? A Ballerino?
For those of you who have never been to a ballet, Imagine a combination of gymnastics and figure-skating acting out a symphony.
And there you have the Nutcracker.
It's one of those things where you have to read the plotline before the play for it to really make any sense as a story but if you don't want to there's always the fun of just watching the graceful acrobats in beautiful costumes.
The Nutcracker was origionally composed by Tchaikovsky in the Romantic era (I'm not quite sure when that was, but remembering the name of the time period makes it look like I know what I'm talking about) and performer at the Fox Theatre by the Atlanta Ballet for the past forty years.
As a member of the crew in my own drama program at high school, it was hard to watch the ballet without having thoughts such as "Oh they have a fly system that is so not fair" and "It must have been hard to pull off that costume change" (After Freak Fashion show 04 I know a lot about thirty-second wardrobe changes).
But even if you know nothing of the technical side of theatre, the Nutcracker is still great fun to watch, not so much for the plot, but for the talented dancers, the lively music, the comedic acrobats that will have you leaving the theatre thinking "I wish I could do that".
It was a wonderful ballet (I keep wanting to call it a play) and I would see it again if I had half a chance.
