Five good reasons Hockey should be America's national sport
So my brain is swimming after talking to the JD's about the baseball stadium they want to put in DC.
They want to use the city's money to fund the construction because apparently the MLB can't seem to find the cash for another stadium.
Instead they said "Here's the Expos. Who wants em? Who wants em DoIhearonemillion?onemillion?threemillion?fourhundredmillion?SOLD!! To the city that can't afford it!"
Now the city of Washington DC is going to put an extra tax on businesses to pay for the stadium. Small businesses. Kinda like Bush's tax cut or something. The less you make, the more you pay.
Special.
I asked couldn't they get a grant from the league or something but Debbie said some rather endearing words about the uptight rich snobs running major league baseball. I guess sorta my take on the NHL right now.
They told me all these things the money from the taxes for the stadium could be used for. Getting athletics programs in the schools, rebuilding some of the schools so the walls aren't falling down anymore, better libraries, I mean, Do they really need that baseball?
"Well couldn't they build the stadium and then the baseball team could help with the community? Like go to the mayor and say 'hey look, you seriously need to get it together and give these kids some new textbooks' or something?"
"With what money?"
"The money the town makes from all the people that come to see the games."
Debby said that actually baseball stadiums rarely raise the amount of money the town makes. It either stays neutral or actually takes away money from the town.
At this point I'm wondering why people can't just drive to Baltimore for their stupid game. At least their favourite players aren't on strike.
I think instead of taxing small businesses who can't afford it, they should put a tax on things that make the most money.
Tobacco, alcohol, porn and baseball cards.
She said they already had taxes on those things for other reasons.
She also said the small business tax was so bad because if they ever needed money from businesses for something important like the construction of a public hospital (since there isn't one in DC), they had nowhere to get the money from for the next few years because of this tax for baseball!
And the Expos aren't even a good team.
I'd understand if they were offering millions for like.. The Yankees or something but come ON.
