Why isn't "phonetics" read phonetically?
So was Pygmalion the inpriation for such cheap films as "Pretty Woman" and "The Princess Diaries"?
At least George Bernard Shaw included a social commentary about the class systems and the diference of language in England at that time. Or maybe the fine art of turning a high school dork into a snobby rich suckup is just something that will look better with time.
Where is that fine line between a classic and a chick-flick? Sure GBS probably had to do a little research on linguistics for the screenplay but Julia Roberts had to learn which one was the salad fork and I imagine that would take some work too.
Maybe GBS didn't even have to work at it, maybe he just said "oh, talk like you're from this place". Personally, I think it's the easiest thing in the world to spell out a pronounciation. Like I have an ... aunt.. I think it is.. Who says the word "creek" like its spelled "crick".
Or when Hannah says Player she spells it playa (which drive me insane. What the hell is a playa anyway?)
A cliche though, is when an origional (such as Pygmalion) is copied so many times that it becomes the norm. The easiest plotline to possibly think of. A cheap ripoff that is totally lacking in creativity. A wizard with a pointy hat is so over-done but we can't get mad at Tolkien because it wasn't a cliche when he wrote it. Or the whole bending over the bullet thing in the Matrix.
So I suppose I can't get mad at Shaw for writing an "I can transform this penniless guttersnipe into a beautifully-spoken lady in time to show her off to all my rich friends" script.
